Education Revolution….
While learning about education from the past and the present, there are major differences in the education that was taught years ago compared to now. From what I believe, there is still more that needs to be taught in school for a child to really be able to fully grasp not just academic knowledge, but more life skills. This would be to better prepare a student for a sustainable life outside of school. A life with choices that give the best outcome.
While sitting in class during the last week, there were things that were brought up about potential problems that could arise by the time I am ready to start my teaching vocation. Over the generations of students that enter a school, there always is a change that come with them. In a TED interview with Ken Robinson, there was a point that he brought up about the changes in the education system. One thing that Ken stressed was the internet being involved with the school. However important the internet is to a schools education it doesn’t focus on the bad repercussions that come from the internet. Ken Robinson states that “We haven’t gotten the chance to get familiar with the internet”. He also means with what come with internet use such as, social media and with that, leading to online bullying.
Now, I am in no way saying ban the use of internet from Schools across the country, no. I think it would be a shame to do that considering how much it can help. However, with internet present in classrooms, come with distractions. With distractions come a decrease in learning. If someone were to tell me that kids today were academically disadvantaged compared to kids who were learning before the use of technology was a major thing, it would not shock me. Unfortunately, technology use and social media platforms are so imbedded in this society, that there has to be a way to work around it while still being able to effectively teach a student.
I think a great way to keep effective teaching and learning is with a act happening now called Leadership for Continuous Improvement. This has Teachers and Leadership positions set quarterly goals, implement strategies for improvement, and even celebrate success. This is a great way to keep students engaged and motivate to learn.
For me, wanting to be a teacher and getting to learn more about little and big things like this, gives me a better idea on what kind of teacher I am going to be. Even with the struggles of the shifting world and I know by the time I am actually teaching students, things will not be the same as they were for me when I was the student. However, the challenges will come with answers, and other educators will be there to help me.
